Illustration
These projects are illustrations I have created for other publishers and projects. My own books have a separate page.
Book covers
I provided artwork for book covers for Gill Books in Ireland, Westminster John Knox Press, Big Table Publishing Company, and WorldTech Editions.
Book of Common Worship, Westminster John Knox Press, 2018
I was asked to create 16 linoleum block prints, 16 small symbols, a cover image, and a number of gesture drawings to illustrate the latest Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church, USA. This edition will be in use for the next 25 to 30 years. I used landscapes to interpret the theme for each section (a waterfall for baptism, a sunset over water for funerals, etc.) since WJK Press wanted this edition to be more art focused than it ever had been, using more than the traditional symbols. See all the landscape prints here. Click here to order the full volume. There are also smaller lay and clergy prayer versions available with fewer illustrations.

Magazine Features
I did Memphis Magazine cover story illustrations about Burke's Books, my favorite bookstore, turning 150(!) in 2025. It was a personal, meaningful project to get to do. Read the story and see all the illustrations here.

Graphic Essays
These are both full page features for Memphis Magazine. Click on the titles to see each one in a bigger, more legible form. I made Portal into a tiny book after the issue came off the news stand.
Memoir of a House
Oxford American, 2023.
Oxford American beautifully asked me to tell them a graphic story and worked with me to make it better. I ended up expanding it a good bit and publishing it as a book once its news stand days were past.
The Story of the Greensward
Memphis Magazine, 2021.
This was a graphic essay about the most recent effort to save the park. The city is forever trying to pave over parts of it for one project or another. Click on the title to read the whole story.

Music Albums
Music is one of my longtime pastimes, and it's been a huge pleasure for me to design album art for musicians I love and admire.

Joe Newberry, a guitarist/songwriter/banjo player and Prairie Home Companion regular who somehow did a magical house concert in my front room some years ago, teamed up with fiddler/step-dancer/tunesmith April Verch to do a Christmas album, and they asked me to design the artwork. I was thrilled, and it's a lovely mix of old and new songs for the holiday. You can find it at aprilverch.com/2021/12/02/otcd/
My friend Andy Cohen (who occasionally terrifies me by having me play bass for his gigs) teamed up with Joe La Rose to release an album they'd recorded years ago but never gotten out into the world. Weenie Man is one of my favorite funny songs, and it was fun to do a cover based around it. Andy even let me include my best boy and muse Mr. Darcy on the back.

Charity projects
Two holiday cards done for The Mid-South Food Bank and one for MIFA. My two favorite local charities.
Sketch Journalism
The Memphis Daily News gave me a regular monthly feature to highlight news and events around town. Here are a few of those illustrations.

Commercial Illustration
I had a lovely period of several years where the Cape Resorts hotel group in Cape May, New Jersey, flew me up several times a year to illustrate their properties. They had a whole mix of places, from the grand old Congress Hall to Victorian cottages to more modern condos, and their web designer convinced them that a set of illustrations would tie those diverse buildings together visually for their website, flyers, and their own Concierge Magazine. It was a dream job. I worked my tail off doing four illustrations a day, but I got to walk on the beach at sunset, eat at their fantastic restaurants, and stay in places fancier than my normal life. I sketched all the properties, sketched holiday decorations, and did illustrations for the restaurant menus.

Linocut posters
I've done a handful of posters as well, from museum shows I've had to a couple of prints for musicians to use for their own posters.

Mid Century Crime Fiction
I illustrated five vintage crime books for Chalk Line Press. They were simple line drawings for a small publisher, and it was fun to read a text and imagine which visually rich parts would make the best pictures. Each book has ten line drawings included.

Liturgical Illustrations
I was artist in residence at my own church, Idlewild Presbyterian in Memphis, Tennessee, for several years, and it led to a fair amount of work for various churches and for Westminster John Knox Press, the publishing house of the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. My biggest job was the Book of Common Worship listed above, but I also did several series of illustrations for their journal Call to Worship as well as individual commissions for various churches and Memphis Theological Seminary. You can see more like these, including complete sets for church bulletins, on my liturgical page.
