I'm still working with gouache and trying to get the hang of it (and also figure out which brushes are going to work best for me). I went to my very favorite spot this afternoon. It's technically a boat ramp, but its basically a small beach, a mix of stone and sand, where two small rivers converge. It's glorious. Mr. Darcy and I hung out and celebrated (FINALLY) the end of my book project. It was amazing to have a Monday where the only thing due was my invoice. It felt marvelous. I've been celebrating with farm stand ice cream, modest sleeps in, and a bit more gouache painting.
The one above and to the side are what I did this afternoon. I also went out in a lovely evening yesterday and painted a scene I've been wanting to do all spring. Never paint your crushes. I couldn't get what I had been hoping to, but I also got a number of photos to supplement the study and will probably do an oil of this one when I get home. I'm still learning, and truthfully I've only done a dozen or so gouache studies, so I know they will get better. I'm looking forward to trying this more painterly style in Paris next month. I've done watercolors there for three years, and I'm looking forward to trying something different.

I had such fun today painting blueberrry bushes at the original Cascadian Farm farm stand. I have eaten their cereal for years and was fan girl excited to find out that this place was just up the road from Concrete. It's a lovely place to stop and have an ice cream -- they make their own from their organic berries, and the just-right-tartness of the raspberry chocolate chip is some of the best ice cream I've had in my life. I went to paint today, since the blueberries against the mountain had been calling to me. The sky was perfectly gorgeous, so it was a fun morning. I came home with ice cream too...

I had been getting depressed about my abilities in gouache. I loved the idea of it but was having trouble mixing colors and getting the right consistency and amount of paint. I think for one thing I need slightly stiffer brushes. Today I decided to move away from the sky studies and try them in the forest today, and I'm much happier with the result. I love that I can lay in a dark area and then pull light on top of it, which you can't do in watercolor. I want to get a couple of less vivid greens as a base to mix from. The single green in my starter set is really vividly unnatural, and it's hard to knock it down enough. But I'm very encouraged with today's results. I did two sketches along the way of my walk today and really had a ball.
Below is the second one, in progress first and then the finished version. I added the blue late, and it got muddy with the green. I might either clean it up or just take it back out all together. I haven't quite decided.

I've always lived in Memphis except for college in a smallish Kentucky town that was still considerably bigger than Concrete, WA, where I've been spending several months. I love the small town events more than anything. Today was the 4th of July parade, that lasted maybe five minutes. Highlights were the mayor dressed as Uncle Sam plus the 4-H club with a number of dogs and one goat. I had a ball sketching. There was also a fun acoustic band at the picnic afterwards to give me something to listen to.

I recently saw a couple of exquisite gouache studies posted by someone on the Urban Sketchers site, and I loved them. I have continually struggled in watercolor to depict skies and clouds the way I would like to. Gouache is opaque, and a little bit more like oils, but portable and water based like watercolors. I'm still getting used to it, and the only green I have is quite vivid, but I think this could become a new love for me. Above is my first effort a few days ago, and then I went out early this morning to paint clouds. Now that I have gouache, apparently the clouds disappear for summer here in Washington (as they largely do at home as well), but they made a reappearance this morning, and I was grateful. I definitely need more practice, but here are my early results.
I think this is going to be fun, with (of course) a bit of frustration mixed in until I figure things out better. But I loved doing sky studies through the huge window where I stay in Paris last year, and now I can't wait to get back with my gouache.

I took a quick trip to the Olympic peninsula to see a rain forest and the Pacific Ocean. It was a stunning place. I didn't have a lot of time for sketching, especially since the rainforest was a national park and wouldn't allow my dog, so I didn't really linger there. It was also dense enough visually that it might have taken me too long to try to focus in on something to paint anyway. But the beach was beautifully open and simple, and I could dive in and paint . First Beach at La Push, and the Native American reservation, thankfully, values the companionship of animals, and I could take Mr. Darcy for walks on their beach and settle in to paint a bit.
I also realized recently (or realized again) that I really do need an emotional connection with a place to really paint it. Not necessarily do a quick sketch for my journal, but to dive in more deeply. First Beach, with its small islands just off the coast, reminded me of the coastline in Greece, where I've spent time in the past, so it was more immediately accessible to me to paint than the rain forest, lovely as it was. I could paint this coastline very happily, I think.

We stayed two nights in Forks because they had a hotel that would take Mr. Darcy. They also had a home cooking restaurant that had bumble berry pie, which was a mix of rhubarb and several berries. That is not something that is available to me in Memphis, and it was delicious. It was certainly worth memorializing in my journal. I alway like to remember good desserts. It was fun to get away and see something new, but it was also good to get back to Concrete and dive into the last phases of the book project.

It was a quick trip, but I did a couple of more sketches. One on the beach, where the wind helped get my sky a bit muddy, and one of the moon rise as Jill and I waited for the morning ferry to start the trip back home.

Plus I did a little sketching at the Jolly Roger, where we had a patio table overlooking the harbor with pelicans sitting up on posts.
I took a few days last minute vacation and joined my sisters and best friend at the beach. I've been buried in my book project still, and I was across the continent and had written off being able to join them, but my best friend decided just to fly over close and rent a car to get to the remote destination of Ocracoke for a few days this past week, and that let me join her and have transportation. So I went. It was delightful. I loved seeing my deep soul people, and it was good to have a couple of days of total hanging out and no work. I managed to do good work in the airport both ways to make up for the break. And I did a bit of sketching just for myself in my journal while I was there, since I wanted to remember this special time.
Above is the lighthouse on Ocracoke. I felt like I'd been dropped into an Andrew Wyeth landscape. And there were pelicans, which utterly delight me.
I did a sketch in the car with the sisters as we drove from Raleigh.

There's a sweet little mixed sand and stone beach at a boat ramp just at the junction of two rivers that has become my favorite place out here. It's got gorgeous trees with ferns and exposed roots hanging over the beach, so you can lean against a cedar trunk and still have your bare feet in the sand. The music of the water is gorgeous, and the views in both directions are flat out lovely. I have so enjoyed going there to picnic, sketch, and simply breathe deeply and enjoy the place. I took advantage of a recent sunny day and did just that. I sketched looking away from the beach, so this isn't a normal beach scene, but it's a part of what keeps drawing me back to that place.

Or "Things We Don't Have Down South."
I've got several truly intricate blocks to carve for the book project, which have been taking all my attention lately. But I've been missing sketching, and I decided to do a quick lunchtime sketch to remember this delicious thing that I have certainly never run into back home.
