I went back to the Evergreen Cemetery my last day in Ocean Springs to sketch again. I really love the trees and headstones. I need to do more sketching at Elmwood here in Memphis again too. This time I used a Derwent Inktense pencil to lay in the drawing before using my watercolors on top.
And I realized I forgot to scan in my first two sketches from my first evening there. I was just finishing up my old sketchbook and about to start a new one. I was tired that night after the drive but went down to the beach anyway to say hello to the gulf and to the pelicans. I sketched the pelicans, sitting on the sand with my bare wet feet from wading, and it was the perfect start to the trip. The sketch isn't very good, but I loved just drinking in that scene. Then as I was heading home I spotted the moon rising over the houses that face the beach and the live oaks in their yards. I did a super fast dip pen sketch with just a bit of watercolor. I've been painting the moon in oils, so I'm tuned into the subject matter. I still can't decide if I like this one or not, but I absolutely like that it's in my sketchbook to remind me of that moment.
