One of the great things about Christmas being over is that now I once more have time to make art for myself. I love commissions, but I have a backlog of ideas that I am now champing at the bit to get to. Steady readers of this blog will remember this block from back in October. I had meant it to be a single, black and white (or brown and white) image, but I began to wonder about putting color behind it. I've carved a second block, and yesterday was its first test run. I have to fix places where the color drops down into the figure, and I'm doing a bit more refinement as I go, but it's close to what I want. The orange definitely amplifies the 70's vibe it already had, but I'm a child of the 70's, so that works for me. I'm hoping it conveys the joy I feel when I play music.

Melissa Bridgman and I had our annual open studio sale this past weekend. I love having her pottery in my home, and I feel so grateful to everyone who came out to support independent artists. It takes a whole community to support the arts, and we have an amazing community here in Memphis. It's that time of year again, so I'm working on a handful of commissions for Christmas presents I had several folks thinking ahead on the house portrait front, so I could get them done in spite of my trip out west. I picked up a pet portrait as well. Working so much on Mr. Darcy lately made me really enjoy painting dogs. I wouldn't mimd doing more of these, though a few years ago I was less confident of getting a likeness that would please a loving owner.

It's been one of those weeks where art time got hijacked by real world events, but I have done a few more watercolors I haven't posted here. The sun is finally out in the PNW, so maybe I'll get to sketch from life. These were done during the two week stretch of mostly rain, so from photos I snapped during the breaks on my walks. It's cosy to sit inside during the rain and do a little painting.
I also did one small holiday bazaar up here in Washington. It was tiny but fun, and I got a visit from Santa (see below). I will also say that the homemade cookies were the best eats ever at any show I've done, and that alone made the day worthwhile.
