Line Drawings

I am continuing to celebrate Inktober (and my lovely new pen) with some very simple line drawings. I've been crazy busy and exhausted with the Pink Palace Crafts Fair (which went BEAUTIFULLY! Thanks to all of you who came out to support and hug me and say a few words) and getting ready for the Dixon exhibition. So a quick line sketch of Mr. Darcy on the sofa in the evening is just what the doctor ordered. It's lovely to do something creative in the midst of the show prep and printing.

Today I did two rounds of printing and filled my print rack, worked with my art journal group at Memphis Theological, and picked up framing supplies. By 5pm, it was gorgeous outside, and I decided to treat myself to a sketch outing in the forest. I started with another simple line sketch.

As I was drawing, Mr. Darcy settled firmly on my foot, and I couldn't resist sketching him as well. That's twice in two days sketching him on my feet. I'll be glad for that come winter.

Memphis Theological Seminary

I started as the Jeanne and Henry Varnell Artist-in-Residence at Memphis Theological Seminary this week. Whew, that's a mouthful. But I'm very excited.

My start date was offically over the weekend, and I celebrated (and took advantage of lower traffic, since I was sitting on a traffic island to do this) by painting Founder's Hall, the main seminary building. It's a lovely old mansion with marble and plaster and a ballroom on the second floor, which is now the chapel (carpeted, sadly, which the dancer in me hates, but with some lovely stained glass added). I can't wait to do some more sketching of the lovely plasterwork interiors.

This week we had a planning meeting to lay out the fall, and the chaplain (my excellent boss Tiffany McClung) accepted my idea of "creation" as a theme for the first month of worship. I'll be creating art for the bulletin each week as part of my residency, and to my delight, they print in color. Much of my

liturgical work has been in black and white to honor the budget constraints of the churches I work with. When I began, pen and ink was more comfortable for me anyway, but I've really been enjoying watercolor the last couple of years, so I'm excited to get to branch out a bit for MTS. Here is my Genesis painting for the first week of chapel. I'm looking forward to doing a series.

Sketching dinner

I had a sketching dinner with Elizabeth Alley last night. Every once in a while we go out to sketch together, talk about our travels, talk about materials, techniques, teaching, and whatever else. I usually sketch solo at places, so it's fun to have a meal with someone else who's doing the same thing.

We ate at Schweinehaus on the patio there. We got seats at the counter facing directly out on the now bustling Overton Square and had fun watching the people go by.

I picked Elizabeth's brains about ways to get a new group of sketchers going and confident in a workshop, thinking ahead to working with students at Memphis Theological Seminary. You can see my notes at the right of the page.

Elizabeth snapped a photo of our sketches together at the end. I love the way she can collage on the page and put different scenes together. I tend to spread out and cover everything immediately.
